The Office of Student Diversity Programs is hosting Georgia Tech’s first-ever, large-scale, campus-wide, office-sponsored Asian American Pacific Islander month! There are a handful of workshops both online and in-person, speakers, presentations, snacks, and giveaways. Traditionally, AAPI Heritage Month is a national celebration in May, but due to finals and the summer break, we wanted to ensure students could attend as many programs as possible, so we have chosen to celebrate in April in order to have a month-long celebration.

Sun Graham, 1st year Computational Media Major and Industrial Design Minor from Somers, New York, designed our first-ever sticker for AAPI Month. The image of the sticker includes a tiger wearing a sweatshirt with an image of a yellow jacket. The tiger is holding a sign that says, 'Protect Asian Lives. Did you know tigers are native to Asia? They can be found in Western and Central Asia, the islands of Java and Bali, in Southeast and South Asia, China, and on the Indian subcontinent, and Sumatra. The tiger is the national animal of India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and South Korea.
'As a Korean Adoptee, reconnecting with my Korean and Asian Heritage has been important to me over the past couple of years. I am forever grateful to be able to find (or create) opportunities here to get involved with the Asian community here at Tech. I created this sticker as a small contribution to raising awareness for the “Stop Asian Hate” movement and I hope you all enjoy it. I hope everyone is staying safe, and continuing to educate themselves in order to help themselves and others.'

Join us for a presentation with a Q&A with Dr. Zhaoxue Lu and Dr. Fang Zhang, practitioners at Pearl Acupuncture and Wellness Center in Portland, Oregon.
Dr. Zhaoxue Lu, LAc, Ph.D & D. Med (China) is the Associate Dean of Doctoral Studies and Chair of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine for the Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) Program at Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Lu earned his BMed in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) orthopedics and traumatology as well as his Doctoral degree in internal medicine from the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. He has taught and practiced acupuncture and herbal medicine for over 26 years. He has been providing acupuncture service at the Family Medicine of Oregon Health and Science University since 2007.
Dr. Fang Zhang, DAOM, LAc earned her Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine(OCOM) in 2010 and earned her Bachelor's degree in Chinese Medicine from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in 1995. She comes from three generations of Chinese doctors. Both of her parents are well known TCM doctors in China and are often invited as visiting professors in the U.S. Dr. Zhang currently teaches at OCOM as part-time faculty and sees patients at Pearl Acupuncture & Wellness Center. She regularly teaches Qi-Gong and Tai Ji for clinicians at Good Samaritan Medical Center of Legacy Health to prevent burnout and promote resilience.

There is a long, painful history of Anti-Asian racism but violence towards Asians have risen during the pandemic and is linked to xenophobic rhetoric that blames Asian people for the spread of COVID-19. We want to see support for the Asian community through your art! Create a #STOPASIANHATE sticker for the campus to be printed for distribution.
The sticker must:
- Include some iteration of the phrase “Stop Asian Hate” – images may be accompanied with the text or you can just create a text sticker

Mindy Kao:
Mindy Kao is a proud Taiwanese American, born and raised in Georgia. She attended Georgia Tech for her undergraduate (EnvE ‘14) and graduate degree (MCRP ‘16) and has lived in the City of Atlanta ever since. She’s passionate about building community and advancing racial equity so that everyone has the opportunity to achieve their full potential and a sense of belonging. Mindy gets to carry out her passions in her professional work as a dynamic project manager with a wealth of experience in project planning, oversight and implementation at the intersection of equity, community, and philanthropy in the Metro Atlanta region. She is currently freelance consulting with nonprofits, foundations, and government agencies, serving as a resource, driver, and thought partner on embedding racial equity in their respective bodies of work. Prior to consulting, Mindy worked at the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, leading numerous grantmaking programs and philanthropic donor initiatives, primarily focused on strengthening community development, grassroots leadership, and equity in the Metro Atlanta region. In 2020, she was selected to participate in The Funders Network’s PLACES Fellowship, a leadership development program for professionals in philanthropy to better understand and address issues of race, equity and inclusiveness. Mindy has also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, conducting research on community and economic development trends and issues in the Southeast U.S. When she’s not working, she enjoys volunteering her time to serve her community. She resides in the historic Adair Park neighborhood in Southwest Atlanta with her husband and their precious dog and cat.
Alex Wan:
Alex Wan currently serves as the Executive Director of Horizons Atlanta, a nonprofit that provides free summer enrichment programs focused on literacy, mathematics, and swimming to at-risk K-8 students in metro Atlanta. Prior to Horizons, Alex most recently served as Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Emory University, and before that as Director of Development at Jerusalem House, Atlanta’s largest HIV housing provider. Alex was the first Asian-American elected to the Atlanta City Council, representing the in-town neighborhoods of District 6 for two four-year terms and served as City Council President Pro Tempore in 2015. His community board service includes Atlanta Regional Commission, Invest Atlanta, Leadership DeKalb, Olmsted Linear Park Alliance, and Organization of Chinese Americans. He is currently on the boards of the Piedmont Park Conservancy and Live Thrive Atlanta, a sustainability and recycling nonprofit, and was recently appointed as Chair of the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections. Alex holds a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree from Georgia Tech and MBA from Wharton Business School. As a Georgia Tech President’s Scholar, he was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Ramblin’ Reck Club. Alex lives with his partner in Morningside, where he has been a resident since 1994.
Kevin Shanker Sinha:
Kevin Shanker Sinha is a community organizer & founder of CivicGeorgia, a BIPOC-led collaborative of organizers & community advocates, and partner organizations. Since 2017, CivicGeorgia has worked to amplify the voice, frequency, and impact of community-led efforts for progress - acting to achieve equity & justice through & in civic engagement. We are dedicated to civic participation by and voice for everyone in our state, with intentional inclusivity for our most silenced communities- Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Georgians, our unhoused sisters and brothers, immigrant and refugee families, adopted people, LGBTQ+ folx, people of varying ability and neurodiversity statuses & identities, young people, seniors, currently and formerly incarcerated people, intersectional communities, and the many of us who are ‘othered’. Learn Chinese Calligraphy with Yuqi Chen

This program is in person and has a 30-person limit. All materials to learn Chinese calligraphy will be provided to participants. Materials include a calligraphy brush, a water mat for practice, paper, and ink. Masks are mandatory for participation.
Yuqi Chen is a student majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education at GSU. She is the great-granddaughter of a famous Calligrapher, Chen Qiquan. Yuqi began to learn the skill of Calligraphy from the age of 4, and was awarded the Gold Prize at Peking University, “Yanyuan Cup”. Yuqi Chen served as a Chinese Drill Instructor at Georgia State University, Perimeter College from 2018 to 2020.

Students who register via our office's paid registration agree to meet as a group (virtually) before and after the conference.
ECAASU is the East Coast Asian American Student Union Conference. The Asian American student organizations have attended ECAASU in-person for the last several years and it is a great way to meet students from other east coast universities who want to learn more about issues that impact the Asian American communities. This year the conference is virtual and we would love to continue supporting the growth of our GT community in supporting the student attendance of the conference.

Through the theme of Resilience, the ECAASU 2021 Conference Team plans to help attendees understand profound healing and provide the capacity and resources for self-actualization, introspection, and critical thinking to encourage an abundance mindset (the paradigm that there is plenty of everything in the world and limitless potential in our lives—from resources, love, relationships, and opportunities). The definition of “resilience” often coincides with hurdling over obstacles and adversity. All of us have faced adversity, especially with the current state of the world. Dr. Rahmani earned her Masters and Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. Her dissertation focuses on the Internalization of Sexism. Join the Georgia Tech Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking for a virtual presentation on paper from Asian countries as well as the Pacific Islands! The program will be led by Virgina Howell, the Museum Director, and Anna Doll, the Education Curator of the museum.

Virginia Howell is the Director of the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking, located in the Renewable Bioproducts Institute. She has been with the museum since 2013, serving as Education Curator until 2019. Howell has been working in museum education for over 20 years, including Reynolda House Museum of American Art, the North Carolina State Capitol, and Cape Fear Museum of History and Science. She attended Miami University and received a Master’s in history from the University of Mississippi. The Paper Museum provides the perfect opportunity to blend her interests in science, art, and history.

Join Rayna Lo as she leads participants in a mindful doodling workshop and the creation of your own identity flags. Learn about what colors and symbols mean and think about what you would choose to design your own flag. This program does not have a limit to participants, however, the first 50 people who RSVP will receive the following materials for pick-up: 1 plain white flag and 5 fabric markers. We encourage as many people to attend to learn about mindful doodling , and you’re able to join with your own materials. All you’ll need are a pen/pencil, markers, and scrap paper.
Rayna is an artist living in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. She is a calligrapher, illustrator, & educator. She is a second generation Taiwanese American born in Chicago, IL. Before embracing herself as an artist, she worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 10+ years. During these years, she felt like she was performing based on expectations others had of her. And what she thought success looked like. For a very long time, she tried her hardest to fulfill the avatar that was created for her. But no matter how much she grew in this career, there was always a part of her that felt empty. She was always stressed out and mentally drained. Feeling lost and unhealthy, she decided to start over. She left her job to work on personal development through her passion for art—the part of her that she ignored for so long. She had to learn new things, unlearn old ways, and be comfortable with the ominous unknown. She had to rewire her thinking to prepare herself for this new journey. She is finally allowing herself to discover parts that she has locked away. She is finally cultivating an untapped reservoir of creativity. Through art, she is processing her personal experiences on what being Taiwanese American means. And through this exploration, she is finally allowing herself to develop her voice as an artist. Through studying Traditional Chinese calligraphy and illustrating through westernized lenses, she is bridging traditional Asian and contemporary art. And when she needs break from studying her Taiwanese culture, she likes creating fun animal characters that personify her.

Finals are around the corner and we want to make sure you're nourished with some snacks as you go into study mode! Each care package contains the following: a Korean sheet mask, instant noodles, a pack of pocky, instant miso, chocopie, chocolate biscuits, rice crackers, a Maxim coffee stick, matcha green tea, lychee choconut jelly, hi chew, kopiko, guava candy, and a fun sticker from an Asian Etsy maker.
You will also have the opportunity to receive a postcard that says 'Have You Eaten Yet?' with different dishes from the Asian communities. We will provide postage stamps so you can send it to a friend or family member to communicate care because that is how Asian people generally ask about your wellbeing instead of saying, 'I love you.'
Students will need to download the Corq app to receive a care package!
